What is hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. When we talk about excessive sweat, we are referring to heavy sweating that is not related to physical activity or warm temperatures. This condition can be very embarrassing and can cause social anxiety, as it far exceeds usual sweating. The most common parts of the body that are affected by hyperhidrosis are the armpits, face, hands and feet. Most people experience symptoms at least once a week during the day. Heavy sweating will mostly occur on both sides of the body, but in some cases, it can be limited to one side.
What causes excessive sweating?
When you sweat, your body’s nervous system automatically sends signals to your sweat glands to cool itself off when your body temperature rises. Sweating can also occur when you are nervous, resulting in sweaty palms. With primary focal hyperhidrosis, the nerves that are responsible for triggering your sweat glands become overactive at random moments. Stress and nervousness can exacerbate the problem, causing your palms, soles and/or face to sweat. There is no medical cause for this form of hyperhidrosis, but it is thought to have a hereditary factor.
Secondary hyperhidrosis results from various medical conditions. These conditions include diabetes or low blood sugar, menopausal hot flashes, heart attacks, infections, thyroid problems, nervous system disorders and certain types of cancer.
