Botox
What is Botox?
Botox is a neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes the facial muscles in order to smooth out moderate-to-severe wrinkles and folds. Botox is commonly injected between the brows, into the forehead and around the eyes for crow’s feet. But there are also lesser known areas of the body and face that can be injected, such as in the chin (to prevent an “orange peel” look), the underarms (to reduce excessive sweating) and the nose (for bunny lines).
Whenever you make facial expressions, lines and creases develop on your skin. As time passes and your facial muscles repeatedly contract, these temporary creases become permanently etched onto your face. At this point, your facial muscles have become overworked and have tensed up. With the right amount of Botox placed in the proper muscles, you will still have natural movement while maintaining a youthful look.
How does Botox work?
Small amounts of Botox can block nerve impulses to the muscles, allowing your facial muscles to fully rest. Neuromodulators work by blocking the communication between the brain and the injected muscles. Without this interaction, muscles lay dormant and therefore do not make active expression. This paralysis is not permanent, however. After a couple months, the blockage slowly begins to fade so that the muscles regain their activity.
What can I expect during treatments?
During your initial consultation, we will do an analysis of your muscle movement and strength. This will help us to determine the amount and location of Botox injections. During treatment, a series of small shots are injected into the targeted muscles. A precise amount of product is carefully placed into each site for maximum, lasting results. The entire procedure takes 10-15 minutes and you will be able to return to your normal activities immediately. A topical anesthetic may be applied to your skin to minimize discomfort during your appointment.
What can I expect from the results?
You will begin to feel the effects a few days after the treatment.* The longevity of Botox depends on three things:
- your metabolism
- your muscle strength
- and how active those muscles are
Some people will metabolize the product very quickly and will therefore need injections more often. Similarly, the stronger your muscles are, the more product you will need. Muscles we use frequently, such as the ones around the mouth and eyes, will need to be injected more often since they are more active. Typically, results last a few months.* Because Botox is temporary, it is best to come in every 3-4 months to maintain optimal results.* Do not wait until it completely wears off, since there is a synergistic effect.
