What Causes Fine Lines & Wrinkles?
With time, the etchings on a chalkboard become harder to erase, leaving behind chalk marks from earlier. This is the same for our face. The repetitive facial movements, loss of collagen, and decrease in skin laxity cause the face to lose its “bounce back” ability. So, fine lines and wrinkles become more prominent in our aging skin.
While used interchangeably, fine lines and wrinkles do, in fact, mean different things. Fine lines are small, shallow, and appear at the beginning of the facial aging process. As for wrinkles, they are the product of those fine lines working deeper and deeper into the skin, leaving thicker lines in areas such as:
- Forehead (Frown Lines)
- Eyes (Crow’s Feet)
- Nose (Nasolabial Folds)
What are crow’s feet?
Crow’s feet, also known as laugh or smile lines, are the given name for the lines around the outer corner of your eye. As flattering as laugh lines sound, these unsightly lines appear in our early 30s, or earlier if you do not use an effective skin care regimen. Either way, these inevitable lines will appear as we grow older. And unlike other wrinkles or expression lines on the face, crow’s feet can appear to look more pronounced or deeper on the skin.
What are frown lines?
Frown lines, also known as the 11s, are the pronounced lines between the eyebrows. However, often times these unwanted lines also appear above the brow and around the eyes. These lines have the added effect of creating an angry or perpetually-tired look. We all want to appear relaxed and approachable, but unwanted furrows between the brows can completely alter the facial expression we intend to give. Both men and women find these wrinkles to be an annoying concern both socially and at work.
What are nasolabial folds?
Nasolabial folds are the deep skin fold creases that run from the sides of your nose to the corners of your mouth. Also known as smile or laugh lines, they are most visible when you smile or laugh, which is where the more descriptive labels come from. Most commonly caused by the repetition of facial movements, everyone has these wrinkles and creases. These folds often become more prominent in the early 20s and their appearance is inevitable. However there are steps you can take to potentially prevent, delay or reduce them. These steps include limiting your sun exposure and refraining from smoking. When someone smokes, they purse their lips, which leads to mouth wrinkles. The chemicals in cigarettes can also accelerate the aging process by as much as 20%.
